Community and Allies - Show your true colours with pride!

Since it’s first appearance at the famous San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade in 1978, the Rainbow flag has been adopted as a symbol representing the LGBTQIA+ community and is used by the community’s allies also as a way of showing support.

Although modified from the original eight stripe design, then seven stripe, the six stripe design has been the standard design since 1979.

The flag’s multi-coloured design symbolizes the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and the  broad range of human gender identities and sexuality.

Each colour was assigned a special meaning:

Red – Life
Orange – Healing
Yellow – Sunlight
Green – Nature
Indigo – Serenity
Violet – Spirit
